Air Products Leadership Giving Challenge

Air Products is generously supporting United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley (UWGLV) with a $100,000 Leadership Challenge to help inspire leadership gifts in its 2012 Campaign.

A leadership gift to United Way begins at $1,000 and up. All new leadership gifts, or an increase of an existing leadership gift, will be matched $1 for $1 through the Air Products Leadership Giving Challenge.

“Air Products has been a long time and significant supporter of our community and United Way,” says Drew Lewis, UWGLV board chair. “We are so grateful for their generous gift of $100,000. These dollars will help leverage new and existing leadership gifts and encourage people to give more. A person’s gift will be multiplied – thus creating a strong impact on the United Way’s long term goals towards improving the conditions of education, older adults and access to basic needs in our community.”

Caring for the communities where their employees and neighbors live and work is a long-term commitment for Air Products. Thousands of employees volunteer over hundreds of thousands of hours annually through company-sponsored “Day of Caring” volunteer programs and by serving as volunteers with non-profit agencies throughout the world.

“The gift of time, treasure and talent from Air Products and its employees is impressive,” says David Lewis, vice president, Resource Development for UWGLV. “We are so thankful for their continued support of United Way through their workplace campaign, corporate gifts, community schools and Day of Caring. They have truly gone above and beyond with this additional gift, which will allow United Way to truly make a significant impact in creating a better tomorrow for our community.”

Through the support of companies like Air Products, United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley has been able to make a difference in the lives of nearly 60,000 people in the Lehigh Valley, including:
  • 6,000 at-risk students who attended school regularly (attendance is a leading indicator to future success in school and the ability to graduate from high school).
  • 1,000 children were fully prepared for kindergarten.
  • 1,900 older adults and their families received support so they can continue to live in their homes.
  • 38,000 Lehigh Valley residents received emergency assistance.

Together, United Way and Air Products have the opportunity to improve community conditions and lives by working towards these long term goals:
  • 80% of children entering United Way supported schools are ready for Kindergarten.
  • 80% of third graders in United Way supported schools can read at grade level.
  • Percent of low-income older adults (>65 years old) increase that have basic self-care and daily independence needs met.
  • Increase the percentage of residents in the Lehigh Valley who have their basic needs met.
“Air Products is proud to invest in our communities through the United Way,” said John McGlade, chairman, president and CEO of Air Products.  “Just as our founder Leonard Pool did, we believe in doing all that we can to support safe, healthy and strong communities for our employees, friends and neighbors. We are honored to partner with the United Way and encourage others to step up their leadership support.”
