United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley (UWGLV) Announces TeenWorks Board Chair Recipient of Prestigious Coca Cola Scholars Foundation Scholarship
Published: March 13, 2017
The Coca Cola Scholars Foundation receives over 87,000 scholarship applications and awards 150 annually to exceptional high school students dedicated to leadership, service and action that positively affects others. Among this year’s group of winners is Dana Emswiler, a senior at Parkland High School and Chair of UWGLV’s TeenWorksTM Board.
United Way TeenWorks is a collaboration between United Way and organized labor that provides a funding source for teens who are doing community service projects. Dana began volunteering her time to United Way TeenWorks board in 9th grade, became recording secretary in 10th grade and was elected Teen Chair in 11th grade. Recently, she received the Zach Kraus Spirit of Service Award from TeenWorksTM.
Dana, who has committed to attending the University of Pittsburgh in the fall, is all about service to her community. She has amassed 1000 hours of community service during her high school years, all while maintaining a 4.4 GPA.
In addition, Dana holds membership in the following Honor Societies: Spanish, English, Science and History as well as the National Honor Society. She has made the Principal’s List for Academic Achievement, been a member of the Varsity Swimming and Diving Team, and a student representative for both the Parkland School District Health and Wellness Council and the Middle States Planning Committee.
“Dana is an incredible young lady,” said Gregg Potter, Senior Director, Labor Relations for UWGLV. “She has given generously of her time, even going so far as to make presentations on behalf of TeenWorks to employees in the Lehigh Valley. She is a hard worker--organized, well-spoken and has all the qualities of a great leader.”
Dana will also be receiving the TeenWorks “Making a Difference Award” at UWGLV’s Celebration of Caring event on April 6, 2017. This award is given annually to a teen who has positively impacted TeenWorks with his/her vision and leadership. “I have the highest regard for Dana,” said David Lewis, President of UWGLV. “She had a vision for what she wanted the TeenWorks board to accomplish and they have prospered under her leadership. Her impact will be felt long after Dana graduates and moves on to college.”
