More children in the Lehigh Valley will enter school with the skills they need to do well, thanks to support from PPL Electric Utilities.
PPL has awarded $24,500 to United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley (UWGLV) in support of its early education scholarships. UWGLV distributes the money to approved early learning centers that meet quality program standards, including meeting state and national criteria that ensure children are ready for school. United Way’s support for early learning helps reach the goal to increase third grade reading by 50%.
“United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley is making a lasting and positive impact on children’s learning and development,” said Carol Obando-Derstine, PPL Electric Utilities regional affairs director. “PPL is proud of their work to meet the needs of the communities where our customers live and work.”
Since 2013, PPL has provided funding for over 180 Educational Improvement Tax Credits (EITC) pre-kindergarten scholarships at UWGLV.
“We are overwhelmed at the support PPL provides for young children and the community. Without these scholarships, fewer children would receive the tools they need to enter school ready to learn,” commented Marc Rittle, Sr. Director, Community Impact.
The scholarships statewide allow more of Pennsylvania’s children to engage in early learning and build the skills needed to enter kindergarten ready to succeed.
