Stand Up for Racial Justice

United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley is committed to being anti-racist and promoting anti-racism work across our community. We cannot serve our communities without directly confronting racial injustice within them.

The Fund for Racial Justice and Equity aims to rapidly invest in community-led solutions that generate reconciliation, cultural competence, humility and courageous conversations.

The Fund is led by a coalition of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) who set priorities and determine funding allocations to support:

Direct funding
  • Investing in organizations led by Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and organizations addressing both systemic injustice and direct needs of black and Latinx communities
  • Rapid funding to support immediate needs of these organizations

Capacity-building
  • Anti-racism training/education
  • Funding to support nonprofits to build capacity to embody just values, policies and practices
  • Forums for critical conversations

Community engagement and leadership
  • Supporting BIPOC leaders and future leaders
  • Supporting BIPOC board involvement at nonprofits in the Lehigh Valley

Advocacy
  • Civic engagement initiatives led by BIPOC communities
  • Advocacy for anti-racist policies and policies that address root causes of systemic racial inequity

Storytelling and culture preservation
  • Supporting schools to move away from white-centered educational content
  • Celebrations of culture and heritage
  • Ensuring that local history gets recorded

Having a hand in making the Lehigh Valley even more vibrant is a highlight of this position I have been personally involved with United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley for years through Women United, and I have seen firsthand the powerful impact of people pooling their resources to help their neighbors. It has been so rewarding to experience a campaign from the other side and to encourage colleagues to support the communities where we all live and work.
