Summer Slide
On Tuesday, November 27, 2018, United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley is participating in #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving.


We know winter is just around the corner, but we're already looking ahead to summer plans for our kids in the Lehigh Valley. This November, we're devoting our #GivingTuesday challenge to fight the "Summer Slide" - when students lose 2-3 months of academic skills if they aren't connected to quality learning opportunities over the summer months. Summer 2018 was a huge success - we are looking forward to an even bigger imapct in 2019!  All funds raised this year will help provide scholarships for low-income children to attend quality summer learning programs.
 
Three ways to give back: 

1. DONATE. Make one day of giving last all summer long. Donate now to fight the "Summer Slide" and help us reach our goal of $2,500.

Last year, Allentown students Kayla and Aiden Gilleo started the summer reading below grad level. By the time school started again in August, both students were back on track. What made the difference? Cleveland Elementary School's summer learning program.

Summer LearningWHY IS SUMMER LEARNING IMPORTANT
  • Low-income students not engaged in summer learning fall 2–3 grade levels behind their peers by the end of 5th grade.
  • Low-income children not reading at grade level by the end of 3rd grade are 13x more likely to drop out of school.

Join the fight against the Summer Slide and help us reach our giving goal of $2,500. With $2,500 United Way can provide free summer learning scholarships for 30+ Lehigh Valley kids.
