Easton Area School District, Paxinosa Elementary School, Crayola, Family Connection of Easton and United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley will celebrate the formation of the newest United Way Community School with a ribbon tying ceremony and program on
Friday September 26, 2014 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Paxinosa Elementary School, 1221 Northampton Street, Easton Pa
. This is the first United Way Community School in Easton.
Community Schools are nationally recognized as a support system for students and their families in high need areas. The model convenes companies, non-profits, mentors, tutors, and other community supports to ensure higher success rates for students. Local corporate partners partially fund the initiative by paying the salary of the Community School Coordinator who, in the case of Paxinosa, will be retained from Family Connection of Easton. The Coordinator works closely to build relationships with the community, students and families and they are vital to the success of the program. United Way Community School students have increased reading and math scores and excel in other academic areas while families receive support services.
Paxinosa’s celebration will include community and educational leaders, students and families:

Principal of Paxinosa, Anthony Viglianti said, “We are very proud to announce that our school is the newest United Way Community School. We want the parents and the teachers to know that we heard you – we heard your passionate pleas to support our children and we couldn’t ask for better support than United Way, Crayola and Family Connection of Easton. We are creating history today and we embrace the bright future our children will experience from programs and partnership in our community.”
Community schools organize programs, resources and services into a single “community hub” for students and families – so the school becomes the nucleus for students to thrive. Programs and services remove barriers to learning, create positive youth development opportunities, empower parents to strengthen their role as partners in education, and to use the community as a living textbook.
It’s important for kids to have all the resources and support they need to focus and learn while in school, said Mike Perry, President and CEO, Crayola. “Community schools involve educators, parents, neighborhoods, and businesses working together to ensure kids are socially, emotionally, developmentally, and academically successful.”
“United Way is committed to building a strong, healthy community and we believe that foundation is built on education,” says Jill Pereira, Director of Education, United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley. “This is our first official Community School partnership in the Easton Area School District and we are thrilled at the response from strong community partners such as Crayola and Family Connection of Easton. Both organizations truly want the best support for Paxinosa students and their families– and their commitment to will positively affect the future of our children.”
