What we do for Seniors

Families and the community benefit when seniors are able to stay safely in their own homes.

Why our mission matters

  • The population of 65+ has increased by 10% over the past 4 years - from 99,000 seniors to 109,000.
  • The average monthly mortgage is under $1,000. The average monthly cost to stay in a nursing home is $7,500.

How we improve the health and safety of seniors

United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley convenes partnerships throughout Lehigh, Northampton and Carbon counties to ensure seniors stay healthier and have a better quality of life.

United Way Keeping Seniors Healthy and Safe in their Homes

Volunteers provide help for every day tasks such as transportation and grocery shopping in order to insure seniors can live safely at home.
Meals on Wheels saved my life. "Meals on Wheels saved my life. If not for the volunteers who came on a Monday and knew something was wrong because my door was locked, I wouldn't be here. I fell on Saturday and couldn't get up. I yelled for help, but no one heard me. I thank God for Meals on Wheels and my friends who are volunteers. Every day they share their lives with me, their private stories; weddings, new babies, sewing tips, knitting tips, recipes. They are my connection to the world. I am so impressed with the meals, because they can accommodate a diabetic diet, and we also receive blizzard bags during the winter months.  Meals on Wheels always makes sure we are fed. Fish is my favorite with the stewed tomatoes, and macaroni and cheese." – Stella, 96
