The Power of Community: Gary’s Journey of Healing at a United Way Community Hub
At United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, we believe that when older adults are connected and valued, our whole community grows stronger. Yet, reports show that one in four seniors in our region experiences social isolation, a challenge that takes a serious toll on health and quality of life.

After losing his wife of more than 60 years, Gary found himself alone for the first time in decades. A lifelong social worker and community leader, he was used to being the one offering support, not needing it..
“I knew I needed help. But not just help, I needed connection,” he shared.
That connection came through Lehigh Valley Active Life in Allentown, one of five United Way Community Hubs across the region. Gary first came seeking a grief support group. What he found was a welcoming place where he could heal, reconnect and rediscover all he still had to offer.
“We want older adults to know their value doesn’t diminish with age,” stated Rick Dougherty, Executive Director at Lehigh Valley Active Life. “Here, they’re not just participants. They’re leaders, teachers and community builders.”
United Way Community Hubs are easily accessible gathering spaces with programming and resources tailored to older adults. Strong social connections can extend life expectancy by 50% and help seniors delay the onset of chronic illness while improving their overall well-being. Last year, more than 6,700 older adults accessed services like meals, housing support and grief counseling through United Way Community Hubs.
“The partnership with United Way has transformed what we’re able to offer. Instead of worrying about funding, we can focus on what really matters—welcoming people and improving their well-being,” said Rick.
Today, Gary teaches wellness classes in the very place he found community. He’s drawing again in art class, slow dancing at evening socials and finding strength in everyday conversations.
“Here at Lehigh Valley Active Life, I found that I still had something to give,” Gary shared. “I’ve always been independent, but you don’t grow just by being alone. I’ve grown because I’m UNITED with others. I have a community now, a family.” When older adults like Gary are supported emotionally, socially and spiritually, they don’t just survive, they grow. Because when we’re UNITED, seniors thrive.
