Marvine Elementary is in line to become a United Way Community School next year. The Book Blast was their first family engagement activity and it was a huge success with almost 200 students and their families in attendance. The majority of the work was done by our Community School Coordinator VISTA, Ellie McGuire, in collaboration with the Junior League of the Lehigh Valley who funded the books, created the craft activity for students and families as well as volunteered at the event. 

At United Way Community Schools Book Blasts are a monthly family literacy event focused on modeling and practicing specific reading skills such as comprehension. Book Blast typically begins with dinner for all, includes a craft activity and culminates with each child selecting a book to take home to grow their home library.
