United Way Women's Leadership Council Elects New President
United Way Women's Leadership Council Elects New President
Published: May 06, 2015
United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley's
Women's Leadership Council (WLC)
elected Valerie Lane as Council President. Lane, who assumed this position in January 2015, and will fulfill a two-year term, succeeds Donna Haggerty, Council President from 2012 to 2014. Lane joined WLC in 2010 and previously served as Vice President.
Lane is a passionate advocate and volunteer for a strong and healthy Lehigh Valley. Currently, she serves on the advisory board for Second Harvest Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity's special event committee, and volunteers at Central Elementary School's food pantry.
Previously, Lane served as Director of Community Services for Muhlenberg College for 12 years. During this time, her office received the Human Relations Commission of the City of Allentown award. In 2005, Lane received the Chairman's Award for Outstanding Contribution to Muhlenberg College. She was also elected to the Parkland School Board from 1995 to 2002. A graduate of Texas A&M in 1978, Lane moved to the Lehigh Valley in 1990 with her husband and two young children.
David Lewis, President, United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, commented on Lane's appointment, "We're fortunate to have a strong leader like Valerie at the helm of this organization. WLC's mission focuses on serving women and children in our community through philanthropy. We're proud of all our WLC members and we look forward to continuing to grow this valuable affinity group at United Way under Valerie's leadership."
In 2014, WLC had an enrollment of nearly 100 members and raised $111,000 toward improving the lives of women and children in the Lehigh Valley.
"WLC has a strong history in the Lehigh Valley, thanks in no small way to its members' vision and dedication to helping women and children in need. It was a privilege to serve as President of this stellar group of women committed not only to helping others but also to growing a stronger WLC," Haggerty noted.
