William Penn Elementary Newest Community School
William Penn Elementary Newest Community School
Published: October 21, 2014
Bethlehem Area School District, Moravian College,
United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley’s Community Schools
and William Penn Elementary School will celebrate the formation of the newest United Way Community School with a launch ceremony and program on Thursday October 23, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at William Penn Elementary School, 1002 Main Street, Bethlehem, PA. William Penn’s motto, Together we learn, Together we lead is the appropriate theme for this special event.
United Way Community Schools organize programs and services in one central place for students and families – their school. These programs and services remove barriers to learning, create positive youth development, and empower parents to strengthen their role as partners in education. The model convenes companies, non-profits, mentors, tutors, and other community supports to ensure higher success rates for students. As a result, United Way Community School students have increased reading and math scores and excel in other academic areas.
William Penn’s celebration will include community and educational leaders, students and families:
WHEN: Thursday, October 23, 2014 from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.
WHERE: William Penn Elementary School, 102 Main Street, Bethlehem, PA
DETAILS: 1:30-2:00p.m.: Launch Ceremony
Speakers to include: Sherri Blevins, PTO President, William Penn; Dr. Byron Grigsby, President, Moravian College; David Lewis, President, United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley; Dr. Joseph Roy, Superintendent, BASD; and Nate Stannard, Principal, William Penn.
Also performing is the Liberty High School Band and a special presentation by students.
William Penn students will attend the celebration and selected students will perform alongside Moravian College students as a special collaborative presentation for the attendees. “Moravian College is pleased to be the Lead Partner in a fifth United Way Community School on the South Side of Bethlehem,” said Byron Grigsby, President, Moravian College. “Helping to create a stronger, healthier community within our own neighborhood is critically important. Change begins with our children and families and we embrace our role in shaping early education to ensure higher academic success rates.”
“Building on the Bethlehem Area School District’s strong tradition of family support and community engagement, the William Penn Community School Partnership will help us transform our special community into a hub of educational excellence,” said Nate Stannard, William Penn principal. “We look forward to working closely in partnership with Moravian College and United Way’s Community School initiative to help our students learn and excel.”
William Penn Elementary School has a diverse population in Pre-Kindergarten through Fifth grade. Located on Main Street in Bethlehem, William Penn is conveniently located several blocks from Moravian’s Campus.
“The United Way believes that everyone in the Lehigh Valley deserves the opportunity for a good life and that starts with a solid strategy around education,” says Jill Pereira, Director of Education, United Way. “This new Community School partnership between the Bethlehem Area School District at William Penn, Moravian College and United Way will help to create broader and deeper opportunities for the students and families of William Penn and the surrounding communities, leading to success in the classroom and in life.”
