Air Products announced the campaign results during a Day of Impact experience supported by 52 digital technology employee volunteers planting seeds at St. Luke’s Rodale Institute Organic Farm in Easton.

United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley’s supporters raised a record-breaking $25,002,145 during the organization’s annual fundraising campaign, marking 14 consecutive years of growth for the nonprofit. The campaign was chaired by Tony and Adrienne DaRe of BSI Corporate Benefits with a specific emphasis on the region’s rising mental health needs.

“At BSI, we saw this need and heard it personally as we visited United Way Community Schools and Healthy Aging Community Hubs,” said BSI Corporate Benefits Chief Executive Officer Tony DaRe. “We knew it was imperative that we act now. That’s the inspiration behind UNITED for Mental Health. By integrating new solutions into our existing networks, United Way can take swift, effective and meaningful action to tackle the mental health crisis in our community.”

United Way announced the results today during Celebration of Caring, presented by Crayola. The event celebrates and honors the collaborative spirit and profound impact achieved through the dedication of organizations, United Way donors, volunteers and partners positively impacting the lives of over 175,000 people this year.

“Thanks to our dedicated supporters, over 120,000 people were connected to food, housing and mental health services, quality of life was improved for nearly 10,000 older adults and caregivers and over 40,000 students were supported so they can thrive in school,” said United Way President David Lewis.

“We are grateful for each and every person who stepped up to create real and lasting change in the Greater Lehigh Valley, and we’d especially like to thank Tony and Adrienne DaRe for rallying incredible support,” said Lewis.

Throughout the annual campaign, which ended on March 31, 2024, BSI Corporate Benefits pledged to make an additional gift in honor of every new or increased donation to support our neighbors’ mental health needs. Across the nation, mental health needs are rising rapidly, creating substantial impacts on all parts of life including physical health, quality of life and even a student’s ability to learn in school.

“So many people in our community are struggling, and we believe we can make a real difference by working together to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and to raise funding for numerous United Way-supported programs and efforts to connect children, parents, employees and their families with the services they need,” said Adrienne DaRe.

Altogether, a strong network of partners and donors increased their contributions to the annual campaign, which ran from April 2023 to March 2024. PPL Corp.’s employees, retirees and corporate foundation have contributed more than $6,000,000 for the second year in a row—a first for our United Way; Air Products raised more than $5,000,000 for the third consecutive year; City Center Group and Crayola each raised more than $1,000,000.

“Thanks to the support over the past year, your United Way invested record-breaking funding into the community at a time our neighbors need it most. With carefully vetted and evaluated programs, our solutions in Education, Healthy Aging and Community Stability are driving positive outcomes across the board,” said United Way Board Chair Dorota Gasienica-Kozak, Partner, King, Spry, Herman, Freund & Faul, LLC Law Firm.

At this year’s event, the organization recognized David Lewis’ 36-year career with United Way and celebrated the new, dynamic incoming CEO, Marci Lesko. This transition marks a pivotal moment for the organization, signifying continuity growth, and a renewed vision for the future.

“It’s almost impossible to think about David without thinking of Marci Lesko. They have been the dream team for the past decade. As a Board, we have full confidence in Marci’s ability to lead us into this next chapter. Her dedication, vision and strategic prowess have already proven to be invaluable assets to our organization, and we stand firmly behind her as she takes the helm,” said Gasienica-Kozak.

United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley celebrated the arrival of spring by announcing a new partnership with Crayola Flowers that offers a colorful and meaningful way to support its mission all year round. Through this partnership, Crayola Flowers will generously give back to the United Way 10 percent of every floral purchase made from the nonprofit’s exclusive online flower shop.

“We are excited to expand our long-standing relationship with Crayola to spread the love of giving and make a difference in our community through the new Crayola Flowers venture,” said Marci Lesko, Chief Operating Officer of United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley. “At United Way, we believe giving should feel good and do good. With each bouquet from our Crayola Flowers shop, people can brighten someone’s day and also support vital programs advancing education, healthy aging, and community stability in the Greater Lehigh Valley.”

To celebrate this partnership, the Crayola Flowers truck welcomed more than 150 guests to a fun and interactive event hosted by United Way Women United at Capital Blue Cross Connect at The Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley. Guests created over 150 bouquets for clients and staff at United Way nonprofit partner organizations from a variety of fresh cut flowers donated by Crayola Flowers. The bouquets will be delivered to local nonprofit agencies and senior centers through Bloomerang, a United Way TeenWorksTM funded program that up-cycles event flowers.

“We appreciate everyone who joined us in celebrating spring with United Way Women United, Crayola Flowers and Capital Blue Cross,” said Oren Shapiro, president of MBLC and co-founder of Crayola Flowers. “Events like this that bring people joy while supporting the local community are exactly why Crayola Flowers was created. By uniting color, creativity and kindness, Crayola Flowers gives people a place to shop with a purpose and share their passion for a nonprofit of their choice. With every bouquet, people can feel good knowing that they’re helping to improve lives and build stronger communities while making someone smile.”

Stunning premade bouquets were also available on-site, making it a perfect opportunity for event guests—as well as Promenade shoppers—to grab a bouquet for themselves or a friend while giving back.  Earlier in the day, the Crayola Flowers truck stopped by the Crayola headquarters in Forks Township where employees also had the opportunity to purchase premade bouquets. As a special fundraiser, Crayola Flowers donated 20 percent of the day’s truck flower sales to United Way Women United.

This engaging event was sponsored by Capital Blue Cross and Crayola Flowers and hosted by United Way Women United, the organization’s donor network dedicated to advancing the success of women and children across the Greater Lehigh Valley.

The Thrive Hub Guides Underrepresented Youth Toward Financial, Educational Success

In a world where access to resources can make or break a child’s future, organizations like The Thrive Hub work to guide underrepresented youth toward success. With the support of United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley’s Fund for Racial Justice and Equity (FRJE) grant, The Thrive Hub is making significant strides in empowering young minds in the Lehigh Valley.

The Thrive Hub’s mission focuses on helping underrepresented students transition successfully from the classroom to their careers. Its approach revolves around four key touchpoints: academic success, personal and professional development, physical and mental health and financial fitness. The nonprofit emphasizes the importance of financial fitness over financial literacy and aims to instill healthy financial practices that can shape a brighter future for students.

“Our overarching goal is to minimize and eliminate student loan debt,” said Rosalind Lucien, founder of The Thrive Hub. “We’re trying to show children what is possible. Many kids think college isn’t an option because it’s too expensive. At The Thrive Hub, we help students raise their academic credit scores to better minimize and eliminate student loan debt and form a connection with a host of opportunities that will open doors for them that they might not have been able to otherwise.”

Through the United Way grant, The Thrive Hub sponsors initiatives targeting middle and high school students that provide them opportunities to learn and grow vigorously. From college field trips and exposure to different cultures to comprehensive college admission support, the organization bridges the gap between aspiration and achievement.

One notable initiative supported by the grant is the “Just Us” cohort, focusing on supporting high school juniors and seniors. This program offers SAT prep, college essay guidance, career exploration, job shadowing and college tours.

The Thrive Hub empowers underrepresented youth for academic and career success, minimizing student loan debt and maximizing opportunities.

Looking ahead, The Thrive Hub is positioned for growth and expansion. This year’s annual career exploration conference, in partnership with Muhlenberg College, was held on March 13 and 14 and hosted over 300 high school students over two days. From New York to North Carolina, professionals throughout the country attended the event to support the students. During the conference, The Thrive Hub surprised one applicant with a $1,000 scholarship, and an Allen High School 2022 graduate received on-the-spot acceptance and a full tuition scholarship to East Stroudsburg University. The event, characterized by a blend of education and excitement, is a testament to the nonprofit’s commitment to creating a culture where education is celebrated and revered.

The United Way grant’s impact on The Thrive Hub is already tangible. Increased engagement, curiosity, and notable successes, such as college acceptances, speak volumes about the organization’s effectiveness.

As The Thrive Hub continues to identify ways to empower underrepresented youth, partnerships with organizations like United Way, Lehigh Valley Community Foundation and others play a pivotal role. Together, they form a network of support and resources that propel students toward a future filled with possibility.

The organization’s mission is particularly relevant following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to end affirmative action in June 2023, which threatens to significantly impact the college admissions process. The Thrive Hub equips students with the tools and knowledge to navigate these challenges successfully.

The Thrive Hub exemplifies what’s possible when communities UNITE to uplift and empower the next generation. Through initiatives like the FRJE grant, United Way and its partners are not just investing in organizations, they’re investing in the futures of countless young individuals, ensuring that no dream goes unrealized due to lack of opportunity.

United Way awarded the following local organizations with grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 through the FRJE:

Grant funding is made possible thanks to partners and donors who directed their support to the Fund for Racial Justice and Equity, including PPL Foundation, Crayola, Behr, Martin Guitar Charitable Foundation, Truist, Lehigh Valley Community Foundation and United Way Women United.
